Year 9 Camp
February 20, 2026

Wellington College’s inaugural Year 9 camp was a memorable and action-packed experience, giving students the opportunity to connect with one another, challenge themselves, and create lasting memories at the very start of their College journey. Held at El Rancho in Waikanae, the camp brought the cohort together through shared experiences, outdoor challenges, and plenty of fun.
With sunny, settled weather on Tuesday and Wednesday after the storm, many students enjoyed cooling off on the giant waterslide, while a wide range of activities kept everyone engaged throughout the programme. From paintball, bridge building, axe throwing and archery, to the mud slide, sports, quizzes and more, the camp provided opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving, and personal challenge.
One highlight moment of the camp was the House Song Contest, where each House performed a song and dance for the rest of the cohort. The energy and enthusiasm on display reflected the strong sense of House spirit developing among the boys, with Waitangi House taking the win. The camp concluded with a powerful haka performed by the students to thank the El Rancho staff — the ihi, wehi and wana were electric, providing a fitting end to an unforgettable experience.
The introduction of the Year 9 camp reflects Wellington College’s commitment to supporting students as they transition into secondary school. Beginning their College journey in a large environment can feel daunting, and the camp provides a supportive setting where boys can build relationships with their peers, Year 13 Peer Prefects, Deans, and Tutor Teachers. By fostering connection, trust, and a sense of belonging early on, the camp helps students develop confidence, resilience, and positive relationships that strengthen their overall wellbeing and engagement in College life. When students feel connected and supported, they are more empathetic, responsible, and ready to contribute positively to the wider school community.
A key factor in the camp’s success was the outstanding contribution of our Year 12 and 13 Senior Leaders. Their willingness to step forward, adapt to changing circumstances, and actively support the Year 9s made a significant impact on the experience. Staff at El Rancho were full of praise, speaking with Mr Frost and Ms Stevenson to express how impressed they were by the leaders’ maturity, initiative, and the positive way they interacted with the younger boys. Their leadership helped create a welcoming and supportive environment, setting the tone for the strong sense of community that defines the College.
The inaugural Year 9 camp was a resounding success, providing students with meaningful experiences, strong connections, and a memorable start to their time at College. We look forward to building on this positive beginning and continuing the tradition with future Year 9 camps in the years ahead! A big ngā mihi nui, thank you to all the staff, students and WC community for contributing to this valuable experience.
