WHĀNAU INFORMATION SESSIONS

Learning Area Leaders – Course Information from Subject Specialists (for students in Years 10 – 12 only)

Meet one-on-one with Learning Area leaders to discuss any questions you might have about their subject area. They can assist with determining suitability for a course, content and assessment queries, and pathway options. This is an informal drop-in session, and you can meet with as many individuals as you require.

Please note – time during these sessions will be limited. If you have complex questions, you may prefer to contact individual Learning Area Leaders independently to arrange a time to discuss your query.

Our resident lawyer Mr Tester will be present during these sessions and is happy to certify copies of birth certificates and passports to aid with university applications. Please bring both the original documents and the photocopies.

Student Leadership at Wellington College – Guy Mance

Guy Mance is the Assistant Principal for Culture and Relationships at Wellington College. In this session you will learn what Leadership looks like at Wellington College. There are ample Leadership opportunities available across all year levels, and this session will address how to get involved, and how to make the most out of these opportunities. Additionally, you will learn about the Prefect structure at Wellington College, and what students should start considering if their aim is to be a prefect when they are in Year 13. Guy Mance and Prefects will discuss the robust process of selecting our leaders, and the experience of being a Leader at Wellington College.

NCEA- Now and the Future – Luci Lendrum

Luci Lendrum is the Deputy Principal in charge of our Curriculum Area at Wellington College. In this session, you will learn about the current NCEA requirements and what your young person needs to think about for Years 12 and 13. For any parent or student who would like to know more about how NCEA works, how to achieve Excellence and Merit Endorsement, and how CAAs and UE Entrance works, this workshop will address your questions. In addition, as NCEA is changing, Luci will be able to address these anticipated changes, and how Wellington College is working towards adapting our programmes for the updated New Zealand Qualifications.

The ideal time to attend this workshop is the year before your child begins NCEA. Most students begin NCEA in Year 12.

Study Habits at Wellington College – Serena Lawrence

Serena Lawrence is the Assistant Principal for Academic Achievement at Wellington College. In this session, you will learn about the Science of Learning and what we recommend for effective study habits for our students. If you are interested in supporting your young person to have better study habits at home, facilitating better outcomes and learning, this session will cover some key habits and techniques for study. This session is appropriate for all year groups and approaches some questions around homework vs working at home independently.

Apprenticeships, University, and Alternatives – Hamish Davidson

Hamish Davidson is the Leader of our Careers Centre. In this session, you will get an overview of Universities, Pathways, Apprenticeships and Alternatives to consider for your young person. Regardless of what year level your young person is in, this session will discuss the future after Wellington College, which can help to form a pathway and goal while they are attending Secondary School. Additionally, Apprenticeship and University are not the only options for young people after school. Hamish will discuss a variety of options available to Year 13 Leavers.
