Wellington College Footwear Code (Effective 2026)

Our Commitment: Consistent Expectations and Values

After careful review of our Uniform Code and significant reflection on recent compliance issues regarding the Wellington College uniform, we have made the decision that, from the start of 2026, footwear for all students will be black shoes only.

What Does This Mean?

This updated rule specifies the following:

  1. Black Shoes Only: All students must wear plain black, traditionally styled school shoes.

  2. No Sandals: This means no sandals of any description will be permitted.

  3. No Non-Regulation Footwear: This includes, but is not limited to, sports shoes, skate shoes, canvas shoes, or fashion shoes such as Air Force Ones.

Our Why: Health, Safety, and Focus

Our primary reasons for this change are multi-faceted, focusing on Health and Safety and the need for consistent compliance with our school values:

  1. Health and Safety: Open-toed footwear (sandals/jandals) and some non-regulation sneakers pose a significant safety risk. They offer inadequate protection against spills, dropped items, and potential slip/trip hazards, especially on stairs and in practical environments (e.g., technology rooms, laboratories). Incidents involving major safety hazards, such as the pouring of contaminants like oil on stairwells, reinforce the necessity of protective, slip-resistant footwear for daily movement and safe emergency evacuation.

  2. Consistent Standards: The time and energy spent by staff addressing and ensuring that young men are meeting our consistent expectations regarding this single uniform item have been significant. This simplified, clear uniform code allows our staff to focus their energy on teaching and learning, rather than uniform checks.

We appreciate your support with ensuring that your son has plain black shoes to attend school with from the beginning of the 2026 academic year.
