Teach Like A Champion Workshops at Wellington College

January 29, 2026

“Social justice means every student’s right to be in classrooms that consistently ensure they can pursue their dreams [….] and create the optimal conditions for achievement.” -Doug Lemov (Teach Like a Champion)

This week, all teachers at Wellington College, along with guests from other schools across the country and Australia, had the privilege of attending a two-day ‘Teach Like a Champion’ workshop. Facilitated by Doug Lemov (author of Teach Like a Champion) and Jennifer Rugani, the workshop addressed key concepts such as, ‘Means of Participation’, ‘Habits of Discussion’, ‘Checking for Understanding’ and ‘Lesson Preparation’.

Teachers discussed both new and familiar concepts that lead to practical techniques to be used in the classroom across the curriculum. This involved video analysis of teachers using key strategies, as well as scripting and rehearsing the language we will be using in the classroom.

A number of Year 13 Prefects were also selected to attend the conference, and they were impressed with the care and attention to detail that teachers were taking to ensure the best conditions for success for all ākonga.

We look forward to staying connected to Doug Lemov’s work by using it in the classroom, the workshops, the studios, and the sports fields with our students.
