Prefect Assembly
February 5, 2026

On Wednesday we had the traditional Prefect Assembly. In 2026, for the first time, we awarded Prefect ties. These ties highlight our school values of Excellence, Integrity and Manaakitanga which the role of a Prefect embodies.
The Prefects are all allocated to specific portfolios for the year. These are Ngā Mahi toi (Arts), Ngā Mahi Hākinakina (Sports), Ngā Ahurea (Culture), Te Hāpori (Community), Te Oranga (Well-being), Te Taiao (Environment), Te Ao Pāpāho (Communication) and Te Rongomau (Mentoring).
There are also five Prefects who look after the Houses, and five who are responsible for our Peer Leader Programme.

In his speech, Head Prefect George Gray talked about the importance of leadership among all year groups and how labels don’t determine who the leaders are. He highlighted two important messages; speaking up, and getting involved. George discussed how speaking up was using one of “Mr. Denhams Three T’s” and that was to be a TELLING school. He also highlighted that standing up for what is right may be difficult, but is important to the growth of young leaders at our kūra.
George then went on to talk about how his experience getting involved in co-curricular activities has been part of what has made his journey at Wellington College so special. He concluded his inaugural speech with what he stated to be the one thing he wishes everyone to take away, it was; “Your voice matters, and we are collectively better when you use it wisely.”
