Part 2 of Know your Brain: Unlocking Study Success
May 13, 2026

This week Year 13 students attended the second session in our Year 12 and 13 lecture series, with Assistant Principal Serena Lawrence speaking to students about how understanding the brain can help improve learning, revision, and exam performance.
A key focus of this lecture was helping students to plan and use their time effectively. Students can significantly overestimate how much time they will have to prepare for exams at the end of the year, and a focused programme of regular revision is essential.
Students were encouraged to make a weekly time to map out both short-term and longer-term study goals, while considering the balance of larger and smaller tasks alongside their other commitments and activities.
Ms Lawrence also encouraged students to share their study plans with whānau, as this can help build accountability and support. Having a clear plan, and sticking to it consistently, helps students use their time more effectively and reduces the anxiety and guilt that can often come from feeling unprepared.
The lecture content is attached below. Year 12 students will attend their second session on Tuesday this coming week.
Thank you for your ongoing support in setting our students up for study success.
