23 Wellington College swimmers competed in the College Sport Wellington Regional Swim Champs at Huia Pool on Friday 26 June. This was the first Regional Swim Competition in Wellington since lockdown. Numbers competing were up and everyone was very appreciative of the opportunity to have their first racing hit-out for a number of months.
Wellington College did particularly well to top the medal table with 6 gold medals and their final medal count of 14 was also the highest in competition. It was also good to see quite a number of our swimmers record significant personal best times.
9 of our Swimmers were among the medals, though a number of others went very close with 4th and 5th placings in tight finishes.
In the Junior Grade (Under 15 years), Finn Harland was in dominant form. He secured 3 gold medals (100 metre Individual Medley, 100 metre Backstroke, 200 metre Freestyle) and each of his wins were by very good margins. David Zhu was similarly impressive in the convincing way he won his 2 gold medals (50 metre & 100 metre Butterfly). Gold medals were also won by Sean O’Connor-Close (100 metre Breaststroke) and James O’Brien (50 metre Breaststroke), with each also winning a silver medal (behind each other in the events listed above).
Our Senior Swimmers (15 Years & Over) were young this year and all of them have at least another year to compete in this grade. Competition was very high and the followingdid well to secure medals – Shane Maskell (silver - 100m Breaststroke), Ryan Double (silver – 50 metre Butterfly), Eligh Ashby (silver – 50 metre Butterfly), Dillon Raimona-Pahetogia (silver – 50 metre Backstroke) and Luke Kuggeleijn (bronze – 200 metre Freestyle).
