Mitsuaki Hoshiyama is a highly respected international student at Wellington College who exemplifies resilience, determination, leadership, and service. Currently a member of 1st XV rugby team, Mitsuaki is also well on track to achieve his NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, keeping multiple academic and sporting pathways open for his future.

Mitsuaki’s journey to New Zealand rugby has been shaped by remarkable perseverance. An early childhood illness meant physical activity was limited, yet through determination and courage he overcame these challenges. At the age of six, he discovered rugby and immediately developed a passion for the game.

A defining moment came when he attended a rugby tournament in Taupō at the age of seven. There, he experienced the unique spirit of New Zealand rugby culture and was inspired by the friendships formed across cultures through a shared love of the game. Watching the All Blacks further strengthened his dream of one day playing rugby in New Zealand.

When the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those ambitions, Mitsuaki continued to pursue his goals with extraordinary maturity. At only 11 years old, he travelled alone to England to study at Millfield Preparatory School, determined to improve both his English and rugby while waiting for New Zealand’s borders to reopen.

In 2022, Mitsuaki finally achieved his dream of enrolling at Wellington College when he enrolled into Year 9. His commitment to New Zealand rugby and education never wavered, and since arriving he has embraced every opportunity available to him. He speaks with immense pride about his teammates, coaches, and the wider Wellington College community, always celebrating the strengths and character of those around him.

Beyond his own studies and rugby commitments, Mitsuaki has also shown outstanding leadership and service within the international student community. He regularly gives up his own time after school to assist Anne Dukes in supporting the English language needs of newly arrived students from Japan. His willingness to help others settle into life in New Zealand reflects his empathy, humility, and strong sense of community.

For Mitsuaki, Wellington College is far more than a school. It has become his home, his community, and the place where treasured memories and achievements have been formed. His journey from overcoming childhood illness to pursuing excellence in academics and elite rugby across three different countries is a testament to his resilience, character, and unwavering determination to succeed.
