The following Wellington College students excel at their chosen sports and have either been selected for New Zealand, represented New Zealand at the top secondary school or age group level, won a National title or set a New Zealand record.
Athletics - Ryan Tinkle (Year 12)
Ryan won the U16 hammer and discus events at the NZSS Champs in December 2007 and also won the U17 hammer (with a new Record) and the U20 hammer at the National Track and Field Championships. At the North Island Secondary Schools Champs in April 2008 he won the open hammer and the U16 discus, and was 2nd in the U16 shot. He has been selected for New Zealand to compete at the Commonwealth Youth Championships in Puna, India.
Cricket - Harry Boam (Year 13)
Captain of the very successful College 1st XI, Harry is the player most named on the College Cricket Honours Board, having made three centuries and taken one 5 wicket bag in the College traditional annual fixtures. Harry gained selection for the NZ U19 team after being the leading run scorer for the U19 tournament (542 runs at an average of 67.80 with a top score of 184). He played in Malaysia against Pakistan and travels to England with the team in August. In 2008 he was selected for the Wellington Firebirds squad.
Mountain Biking - Tom Bradshaw (Year 11)
Tom won the U17 Cross Country and U19 Hill Climb at the NZ National Championships. He also won the NZSS U15 Boys overall title by taking out the U15 Cross Country and U15 Hill Climb.
Rowing - Sam Wells (Year 13)
Sam won the North Island U17 Single Sculls Trophy followed by the National Title at the 2008 Maadi Cup. Sam placed second in the U19 double with Joe Trappitt and 4th in the U19 single sculls.
Softball - Joel Evans (Year 12)
Joel has been selected for the third year in a row for the Junior Blacksox softball team and will play in the World Championships in Canada. As captain of the College team, he led them to a second bronze medal at the NZSS Championships. Joel won the Dominion Post ‘College Sport Softballer of the Year’ Award in 2007.
Swimming - Gareth Kean (Year 12)
Gareth was selected for the NZ Men’s swim team to the Oceania Championships held in Christchurch in June 2008. He is the Current holder of four NZ records: 15 yrs 50m, 100m & 200m backstroke and the 16 yrs 100m backstroke. He has also won gold at the Australian Age Group Champs, the NZ Group Champs, and the North Island Secondary School Champs.
Table Tennis - Yotam Bar-Shalom (Year 12)
Yotam is the only person outside Auckland to be selected for the NZ U18 Team to compete in the World Junior Circuit and the 2008 Oceania Championships.
Tennis - Finn Tearney (Year 13)
As well as playing in the NZ U18 team, Finn qualified and played in the Australian Junior Open. This year he reached 61 in the ITF U18 rankings. An integral part of the Wellington College team which won a silver medal in the NZSS Championships, Finn went through the tournament undefeated. He won the Dominion Post ‘College Sport Tennis Player of the Year’ awards in 2006 and 2007.
Yachting - Josh Porebski (Year 11)
Josh represented New Zealand in the World Youth Laser Radial Championships held in Auckland in March 2008. He made it into the gold fleet finishing 27th and was the top-ranked 15 year old. Josh is a member of the NZ Youth Academy.
Yachting - Jackson MacFarlane (Year 11)
Jackson represented New Zealand in the World Youth Laser Radial Championships held in Auckland in Marsh 2008, and qualified for the silver fleet.
