Wellington College Rugby: “Enjoying Success since 1876”
The Club: Rugby at Wellington College is run by the Wellington College Rugby Football Club (WCRFC) which was established in 1876 and is one of the oldest of its kind in the country. 2010 saw the 1st XV win their 8th successive Quadrangular Tournament and all of their Traditional fixtures, while 2009 was an even more successful year for rugby in the college with 7 teams making their respective regional finals. 2009 also saw the remarkable achievement of the College taking out the Premier 1, 2 and 3 divisions – the first time a school had managed this in Wellington secondary school rugby history.
History: Wellington College is a very proud and traditional NZ rugby school. The 1st XV also compete in the oldest secondary school rugby tournament, the Quadrangular Tournament, which the College has now won for a record 8 consecutive years. Wellington College also competed in the first ever recorded secondary schools match against Nelson College. 2011 will see the College host the tournament with games on Monday 22 & Wednesday 24 August (Match times 12.15pm & 1.45pm).
All Blacks: Wellington College boasts the third highest number of All Blacks of any secondary school in the country; the most recent being current All Black Neemia Tialata.
Coaching: The WCRFC prides itself on offering top coaching to its players and providing pathways to move through the grades and onto higher honours. Strong links exist with the Wellington Rugby Football Union and the schools coaches are able to take advantage of numerous development opportunities.
