AMERICAN FOOTBALL
The Wellington College Wolverines are managed and run by the Wellington City Wolves A.F.C. Played during the third and fourth terms and finishing before the exam period, this new and exciting collision sport is open to all students. All necessary equipment is provided, and no previous experience is required.

BOWLS
Bowls has flourished over the past few years with increasing numbers playing and winning local competitions. All ages are welcome to play and coaching is available at the Berhampore Bowling Club. Season: Terms 1 and 4.
TRAINING: Wednesdays at the Berhampore Bowling Club
COMPETITION: Inter-collegiate – Thursdays. Regional Championships held in Term 1, NZ Secondary School Championships held in Term 4.
CROSS COUNTRY
Wellington College is the most successful school in the country in the history of the National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Athletes who wish to have more competition may compete for a club and run in club championships most Saturdays as arranged. The senior team are current NZSS Champions. The season is Terms 2 and 3, and training commences in the final three weeks of Term 1.
TRAINING: 7:00am Tuesday and Thursday in the Sports Centre, optional runs after school on Wednesday
TRIALS: Time trials are held two weeks before each major event
CROQUET
The Inter-college competition takes place at Mt Victoria Croquet Club with teams made up of four players and a reserve. No age limits. All training and equipment is provided by the club but students must be committed to attend. The season is Term 1.
VENUE: Mt Victoria and Karori Croquet Clubs
COMPETITION: Inter-college – after school
DUKE OF EDINBURGH (Young New Zealanders’ Challenge)
The Duke of Edinburgh (Young New Zealanders’ Challenge) Scheme encourages students to participate in outdoor adventures, make a contribution by serving their local community, and improve their skills in a sporting and recreational activity of their choice. Restricted to students aged 14 and over.
COMMITMENT: Service Section: 3 – 12 months depending on award level.
Expedition Section: 2 – 5 days depending on award level Skills Section: 6 – 18 months depending on award level Physical Recreation Section: 3 – 5 months depending on award level
Residential Project: undertaken at gold level
GOLF
Players of all standards are invited to play Wellington College golf at Miramar Golf Course, with competition teams selected according to handicap. We do not offer coaching. Wellington College won the NZSS Championships in 2006. Held on Mondays after school in Terms 1 and 4.
COMPETITION: Traditional fixtures, Phillips Cup, Wellington Secondary School Championships
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Previous experience is not required and there is no limit on age. Weekly rides are arranged to incorporate local tracks, with the opportunity to compete in events if interested. The season is Terms 1 and 4.
TRAINING: Once a week for Terms 1 and 4 after school, usually Wednesday
VENUE: Mt Victoria, Makara Peak and other tracks around Wellington
COMPETITION: NZ Secondary School Championships at Levin (April), including downhill, cross country and hill climb events. PNP Local Race series: Five events, September to November (weekends)
MULTISPORTS
The Wellington Secondary School Triathlon Championships take place in Term 1. Individuals and team entries will be called for early in Term 1. The NZ Secondary School Championships take place in March. Other multisport opportunities include the NZ Secondary Schools’ Duathlon and Multisport Championships.
ORIENTEERING
Orienteering involves finding your way across country with the aid of a map and compass. It is held every second or third Sunday in Terms 2 and 3, starting at 10:30am. This sport is easy to combine with cross country running or a Saturday sport.

ROAD CYCLING
An excellent activity for cross training or those interested in competitive racing. There will be pack cycling after school once a week early in the season and this will become more regular closer to any competitions. Cyclists who wish to participate in any tours are expected to train extensively on their own. The season is Terms 1 to 3.

COMPETITION: Tour of Wellington, Tour of Blenheim, NZSS Championships
SMALLBORE RIFLE SHOOTING
This activity for Years 10-13 is run in conjunction with the Brooklyn Smallbore Rifle Club. All equipment, coaching and ammunition is supplied at a cost of $10 each. The season is part of Term 1 and Terms 2 and 3.
TRAINING: Wednesdays 7:30pm–9:30pm March to September
COMPETITION: Inter-secondary schools matches are held in July, August and September
SOFTBALL
Softball at Wellington College is traditionally very strong with most players involved at club level during the season. The College senior team gained Silver at the NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships in 2009. The season is Term 1 for seniors (Years 11-13), and Term 3 for juniors (Years 9-10).

VOLLEYBALL
Wellington College volleyball is gaining in popularity and has some very good players. Competing in the local Wellington Schools league, the Junior and Senior A teams also play in the NZ Secondary School Championships.
TRAINING: Monday and Thursday evenings at the Sports Centre and other schools
COMPETITION: Local leagues Wednesdays and Fridays
SEASON: Terms 1 and 4
