There is huge interest in debating at Wellington College with over 120 students involved. This goes against the trend of diminishing interest in many schools. Any student can become involved.
There are eight teams which compete in the Wellington Inter-collegiate competition, and these debates take place after school.
In addition, the College runs both a Junior and Senior in-house competition. These teams (10 at both levels in 2008) are coached by senior inter-collegiate debaters, and a fiercely contested competition is run during lunchtimes. This is an excellent way to get into debating, and to develop the skills of structuring an argument and research which debating requires. An In-house Impromptu Competition is also held in Terms 3 and 4, attracting a large number of competitors and interested audiences.
